Elizabeth Taylor, 78, is renown for her many husbands and divorces almost as much as she is for her stellar age-old acting career. Here’s a look at the men she married, and in one case, re-married. —SHEREE R. CURRY
No. 1: Conrad “Nicky” Hilton
May 6, 1950 – Jan. 29, 1951
About 2 1/2 months after she turned 18 years old, Liz wed hotel heir Conrad Hilton (Paris Hilton’s granduncle). They divorced 205 days later, a month before she turned 19.
No. 2: Michael Wilding
No. 3: Michael Todd
Feb. 2, 1957 – March 22, 1958
Less than a week after her Saturday divorce from Wilding, the then 24-year-old Liz, who was married a man nearly twice her age, Michael Todd. Their daughter, Liza, was born via cesarean section six months later in August. Todd ordered the doctors to sterilize Liz after the birth, fearing for his wife’s future safety. Liz did not divorce the 1909-born Todd, however. The actor, who was three years older than her last husband, was killed at the age of 48 in a in a plane crash a month and a half after their first anniversary.
Elizabeth began dating husband #4, singer Eddie Fisher, only a few months after the burial of husband #3. The twist is that Eddie, father of actress Carrie Fisher, was married at the time for three years to the graceful Debbie Reynolds. Eddie had been a close friend of Liz’s late husband Michael Todd, and apparently in the midst of consoling the bereaving Liz, the two grew extremely close. They married a little over a year after Todd’s death. The Taylor-Fisher marriage lasted 5 years—when Liz moved on to actor Richard Burton before the divorce and just after they had begun adoption proceedings for their daughter.
Liz, while still married to Eddie Fisher, began dating a married Richard Burton while the two were filming their on-screen romance in the film, ‘Cleopatra.’ They went on to make 11 movies together, including “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf” and ironically, “Divorce His – Divorce Hers.” Burton officially adopted the daughter Liz had with Michael Todd, Liza Todd Burton. And since Elizabeth was no longer able to have children thanks to Todd having her sterilized, she and Burton adopted a Germany-born daughter, Maria Burton. The two had a 10-year marriage before they called it quits, but….
Liz Taylor remarried Burton about a year later, after doctors found spots on her lungs that she feared could be cancerous. But after Burton allegedly began drinking again, the remarriage soon turned sour and they ended it less than a year later
Not even waiting five months, Liz subsequently married John Warner, a former Secretary of the Navy who soon took office as a U.S. Senator from Virginia shortly after their marriage
After almost a decade as a single woman, Liz, at age 59, married Larry Fortensky, a 39-year-old construction worker with a mullet. The marriage last a surprising five years.
